We've scored a home run with our new turf

Sports event and tournament planners love us! With quality fields, well maintained facilities and plenty of family friendly dining and entertainment options, it’s easy to see why. And our best just became even better when we recently unveiled four new artificial turf diamonds at Allen Station Park just in time for softball season.

“Allen has always been a leader in developing cutting edge facilities and this facility is no different. There are fields in the metroplex that installed artificial turf, but this is the first of its kind where an entire complex has been installed,” said Tim Dentler, Allen Parks and Recreation Director. “The synthetic turf will give the fields at Allen Station Park a more even play surface, will be more weather tolerant and will reduce the amount of maintenance necessary resulting in more available play time.”

While artificial turf no doubt conjures up images of rigid plastic with an unhealthy sheen that was all the rage in the 1970s and 1980s, the past 10 to 20 years has been kind to artificial turf – very kind, in fact. With soft and spongy blades of grass, today’s synthetic turf more closely resembles actual grass than its itchy ancestor, Astroturf. And, the newly designed turf is tough! It’s designed to stand up to running, sliding and all the things that make a good softball game.

So why make the switch?

Artificial turf offers many advantages over natural turf.

  • Superior playing surface means no more bumps, holes or spots with missing grass which improves player safety from trips and falls.
  • Less maintenance eliminating the need for irrigation, fertilization and mowing which increases play by 50 to 100%.
  • Minimal weather impact and no more muddy mess from spring thunderstorms which reduce game cancellations.
